The Veterans of Foreign Wars [VFW] is a Veterans Service Organization whose membership is limited to those veterans who have served our country in time of war and in an area of the conflict. Membership is not limited to any branch of service, rank, or Military Occupational Specialty; we include members from all the branches. It is your service and the risks faced that makes you eligible to join.

Intent:

The VFW exists to serve all veterans, not just our members, and to serve the communities in which we live.

History:

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8063 was formed as a Lafayette Post in 1980-81 by a number of Vietnam veterans and others from WW II and Korea who thought that a post in Lafayette was needed. National VFW recognized our post and issued a charter in 1981. We joined American Legion Post 517, Lafayette in using the old Veterans Building at the corner of Mt. Diablo Blvd. and First Street in Lafayette. After a few years in operation the members recognized that most of us lived in cities other than Lafayette so it was decided to petition to have the Post re-chartered under the more inclusive name of LaMOrinda to recognize the three main cities where our members lived. National VFW issued a new charter with the new name and the same number. Through years and the efforts of many commanders and members our membership grew to about one hundred and twenty five with members living as far away as New York, Hong Kong, Montana and Virginia. In the late nineteen nineties the post from Walnut Creek was wrapped into Post 8063 increasing our membership and the area that we represent. Membership continues to grow with new members moving into the area and others returning from their service to our country. Unfortunately, like other veteran's organizations, our members are not getting any younger and we are losing some as the years go by.

Through the years Post 8063 has done many things to be of service. We have helped local veterans by giving them the support they needed. Both the local Veterans Clinic in Martinez and the one in Palo Alto have received aid and equipment they requested. Our post has built decks at local schools so kindergarteners could do their art out of the mud and gazebos that allow seniors and others to have a dry place to wait of public transportation.

Our post continues to strive to meet the social and other needs of its members and to help all veterans and our community.
