Building Description
At
the western fringe of Lafayette, with the downtown core area only about
one-half mile to the east, the Veterans Memorial Building is constructed
on a 1.28-acre site located at the northeast corner of Mt. Diablo Boulevard
and Risa Road in Lafayette, CA. This is a long, narrow, rectangular east-west
parcel having its primary frontage on Mt. Diablo Boulevard
with the building sited at the western end on the corner with Risa Road.
The eastern majority of the site provides parking for 56 cars including
five disabled spaces and there is a circle turnaround at the front building
entry for the unloading and loading of passengers and supplies as well
as a utility loading area at the rear off Risa Road. Additional parking
is available across Mt. Diablo Boulevard and on Risa Road.
Designed by Field-Paoli
of San Francisco, ground breaking took place on 22 April 2004 with construction
completed in late 2005 by veteran owned McCrary Construction Company,
also of San Francisco. The 9,500 square foot building takes the form of
a lodge with a dramatic granite and glass exterior and cathedral-like
interior featuring grand, airy spaces with high beamed ceilings, ample
maple wood trim, clear-story glass, and stained concrete decks to complete
the rustic styling which earned a 2007 Honor Award from the International
Interior Design Association.
The
large covered main entry is at the east end of the building with direct
access from the parking lot. There is a ramp to accommodate wheelchair
access that leads past a large open front plaza featuring the "Honor
Wall of Patriots." This wall contains 360 bricks honoring local patriots
and is flanked by two flagpoles flying the National, POW, and State colors.
Extending from this front plaza is a large open patio flanking the north
side of the building and providing access directly into the event halls.
The main entry leads
into a large central gallery running most of the southern length of the
building. This gallery is flanked on the south by a glass wall overlooking
Mt. Diablo Boulevard, and by the main event hall (s) to the right (north).
The main hall contains approximately 3,580 useable square feet and can
be split into two event halls (east and west) by an accordion sound wall.
There is a sound system and phone lines, power outlets, Internet connectivity,
and each hall has its own projection screen. The basic hall capacities

At
the northwest corner of the building is a fully equipped, modern, stainless-steel
kitchen with a full complement of cook tops, ovens, a broiler, microwave,
double refrigerator, a freezer, 400 pound ice machine, two coffee makers,
and a high speed dish sanitizer. The kitchen has direct access to the
Freedom Hall and the rear utility loading area.
The southwest corner
of the building contains Liberty, the fully equipped lounge with bar,
cocktail tables, and fireplace. This room can also serve as a meeting
facility for groups of about 30 or as a private area for dressing or staging.
Between the kitchen
and lounge at the west end of the building are the restrooms. There is
no event storage. All event supplies must be delivered just prior to an
event and removed immediately thereafter.
